Leadership Donation Wall

04/22/2019 10:35:25 AM

Apr22

As the new building is now within a few months of opening, we are getting down to the final details.

One of the wonderful things about our Congregation has been the broad support for the building – both emotional and financial.

As previously noted, there will be a wall in the Lobby of the new building with names of some of our larger donors - individuals and families who have given $18,000 or more to the building campaign. Larger levels of donation will be noted by the font size of the lettering.

As we prepare for the building opening, we would like to have this wall as complete as possible to recognize these generous donors.

While some donations have been 100% fulfilled by now, others are well along the way, and some not as much. In order to ensure that those on the Wall are fairly represented we have come up with the following policy:

  1. Any donor who has pledged to donate $18,000 or more AND has given at least 60% of their pledge by June 30, 2019 will be added to the Leadership Donor Wall at the appropriate font size of their pledge.
  2. Any donor who has not donated their full pledge by December 31, 2021 will have their names adjusted or removed from the Leadership Donor Wall to represent their actual donation.

If you would like to make a new pledge of $18,000 or more, or to raise your current pledge to $18,000 to be a part of the Habonim Leadership Donation Wall, it is not too late.
Please contact Ted Rechtshaffen at 416-807-6222 or tedr@tridelta.ca to discuss your donation further.

If you would like to check on your donation status to see if you are set to be on the Habonim Leadership Donation Wall, please contact Robin at 416-782-7125 or office1@congregationhabonim.org

Thank you to all for your financial support of the new Habonim Building at every level. Together we have made a new home that is getting ever closer to reality.

Habonim Holocaust Project

04/18/2019 03:41:30 PM

Apr18

Dear Habonim Members,

As we prepare for Passover this year, and our thoughts turn towards dark periods of human history and the meaning of liberation, we to invite you to be part of the Habonim Holocaust Project.

Habonim is embarking on a design project which will integrate stories of the Holocaust into the new building. We wish to gather personal histories from members and invite you to share your family’s Holocaust experiences with us. The stories will be woven into an illuminated artistic tapestry of Holocaust stories, which layers text with maps and fragmented Stars of David. This initiative speaks to an important part of our congregation’s history, Habonim was founded by Holocaust survivors in 1954.

If you need assistance to capture your family’s story in the written format below, please reach out to us, as we have a volunteer copywriter to assist.

We know these histories are precious and will only incorporate your narrative in the design with your written consent. All stories submitted will be included in the tapestry. Here’s a summary of the information we need and the format:

  1. Identification: Please include names of those to whom the story/experience relates
  2. Location: Please be as specific as possible
  3. Submission Length: Narratives should be a maximum length of 250 words
  4. Contact Information: Please include your name and email address
  5. Please email your submission to:  susanliebel22@gmail.com

Please help us capture our history in art and architecture so that our stories will live on for generations.

Wishing you and yours a Happy Passover,

Eli Rubenstein

Religious Leader

Six Million Buttons @ MOL2019

SIX Million Buttons

This past year one of our congregants, Eynat Katz,  visited a number of Jewish Day Schools in Mexico City. Students at Colegio Hebreo Tarbut decided that in preparation for their March of the Living journey they want to collectively work on a meaningful project. They are currently inviting all schools and the Jewish communities at large, to help in the collection of “Six Million Buttons”   ONE BUTTON = HONORS AN IDENTITY

Please look at this most powerful 2 minute video clip they just translated into English https://youtu.be/Uk2HAaIvYMo

We invite you all to help our friends collect buttons – through your children's schools, work place, individually, and/or as a family. On April 25th we will be collecting all the buttons in preparation for taking them with us to Poland. On Yom Hashoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day -  March of the Living participants from all 52 United States and many other countries will come together with Holocaust survivors and educators to participate in a 3 kilometer March from Auschwitz to Birkenau as a silent tribute and memorial for victims of the Shoah. The collection of buttons will be recorded and once the installation is completed by the students from Mexico City it will be shared with all.

Buttons may be dropped off at our Passover/Yizkor service on April 27th at Leo Baeck or alternatively, contact Eynat Katz to make other arrangements.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day

01/28/2019 04:30:48 PM

Jan28

Sunday Jan. 27th, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marked the 74th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, and was observed with commemorative ceremonies around the world. In Ottawa, Library and Archives Canada held a special event, highlighting the acquisition of a rare book, published in Nazi Germany in 1944, for their collection. The book, which was found in Adolf Hitler’s library, Statistik, Presse und Organisationen des Judentums in den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada (Statistics, Press, and Organizations of Jewry in the United States and Canada), is a detailed census of Jewish populations and organizations in North American cities. It serves as a chilling reminder about Hitler’s intention to eliminate Jewish life in Canada and the US should the Nazis have conquered this continent.

Around the same time, the Azrieli Foundation and the Claims Conference released a shocking study revealing, among other things, that more than half of Canadians and nearly two-thirds of young people in this country do not know that six million Jews perished in the Holocaust.

Our own Eli Rubenstein was the keynote speaker at the Jan. 27th event in Ottawa, and was also interviewed by CBC about the the Azrieli Foundation and Claims Conference study.
