This past Sunday, Toronto’s Jewish community gathered at Earl Bales Park for a community vigil in memory of the six Israeli hostages murdered by Hamas.
The ceremony was organized by Habonim memeber Eynat Katz together with UJA Federation and Naomi Parness founder of The Narrative Agency and was led by Habonim's Rabbi Cantor Aviva Rajsky & Cantor Kim Kowarsky Doron. Speakers included Maayan Shavit and Maureen Leshem (see details below) and MP Melissa Lantsman (also a Habonim member).
We continue to hope, pray and advocate on behalf of the 101 remaining Israeli hostages, for an end to this horrific conflict and for peace to be granted to all inhabitants of the region. ---------------
Maayan Shavit Toronto resident Maayan Shavit is the cousin of Carmel Gat one of six Israeli hostages recently executed by Hamas. One of Shavit's aunts was murdered during the Oct. 7th attack while another of her cousins was taken hostage but released a month later.
Maureen Leshem Toronto resident Maureen Leshem’s cousin, Romi Gonen, was shot and wounded before being abducted from the Re’im Supernova Festival Oct. 7th.
More than 200 hostages were seized in the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7 that killed more than 1200 people.
