Yesterday’s conviction of former US President Donald J. Trump on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up illegal payments in order to influence the 2016 U.S. elections was one of the most remarkable days in US history.
It was a day when the maxim “no man is above the law” was visibly and resolutely upheld in the eyes of most America and the world.
I thought I might share with you the sermon I delivered on Yom Kippur in September of 2020, titled: “The Dangers of Populism”. In that speech, I discussed my many misgivings concerning the then President, and also shared with you the contrasting models of ideal Jewish leadership from the Torah.
Please note this sermon was delivered on Zoom during the height of the Covid 19 Pandemic, when synagogue members viewed the services from their homes. The sermon also does not reference the January 6, 2021 attack on Congress, since this cataclysmic event took place several months later, after the election of President Biden, before his inauguration.
