In this week’s Parsha, Lech Lecha, we read of “The Call of Abraham” where Abraham is chosen by God to be the father of the Jewish people. One of Abraham’s most compelling characteristics, and perhaps why God chose him for this role, was his compassion for all humanity, whether it was for strangers wandering in the desert who he and Sarah welcomed into their tent or even for the sinners of Sodom and Gomorrah whose lives Abraham pleaded for with God.
Abraham’s universal compassion is something the rabbis encouraged us to emulate, describing the Jewish people as “Rachmanim Bnai Rachmanim”, which means, "compassionate people, the descendants of a compassionate people".
In s similar vein, since the American evacuation of Afghanistan, heroic efforts have been made to help some of its most vulnerable people. See CNN and CJN links below about how Canadian Jews, an Israeli aid group and the UAE helped rescue over 100 endangered Afghans from Taliban rule.
